The countdown is on. From October 1st, 2026, a new Vaping Products Duty will officially come into effect across the UK. We wanted to write this blog to cut through the noise and give you the clear, practical information you need. Consider this your friendly heads-up and survival guide from the Pukka Juice team. 💨

What Exactly is This New Vape Tax?

Put simply, the government is introducing a new excise duty on e-liquids, making it one of the most significant regulatory changes for the vaping industry since 2016 . Think of it like the duty on alcohol or tobacco - an indirect tax applied at the point of manufacture or import that ultimately passes to the consumer.

The duty is set at a flat rate of £2.20 per 10ml of e-liquid . It applies across the board, regardless of nicotine strength - even zero-nicotine shortfills are included . And don't forget, VAT at 20% is added on top, meaning the real increase is actually £2.64 per 10ml.

The Stamp of Approval: Spotting Taxed Stock

To distinguish between taxed and untaxed goods, new Vaping Duty Stamps will be attached to product packaging . These stamps work as a security seal - if you’ve ever bought cigarettes abroad, the concept will be familiar. From October, newly manufactured stock will need to carry this stamp.

The Grace Period: Why Prices Won't Jump Overnight

Here’s a crucial detail: there is a six-month grace period for retailers to sell "unstamped" stock that was manufactured or imported before October 1st . While the tax applies from October, this transition phase lasts until April 1st, 2027. That’s when it becomes illegal to sell any product without a duty stamp .

This means prices may not shoot up on day one. Retailers may choose to increase prices gradually as their old stock sells out and new, "stamped" stock comes in. This is why October 1st is the earliest date you might see price changes, but it’s not necessarily the date you will. We can confirm at Pukka Juice we are doing our best on stocking up before October 1st so that our customers can benefit with low pricing until April 1st 2027.

We encourage all our customers to do the same.

Why is The Government Doing This?

The official line is that the tax aims to make vapes less affordable to young people, while the money generated will help fund enforcement against illegal vapes . To ensure vaping remains a more affordable alternative to smoking, the government is also increasing tobacco duty by £2.20 per 100 cigarettes from the same date.

The Silver Lining: Hardware is Safe!

Here's a bit of good news: the new duty only applies to e-liquid. This means your actual vape kits, batteries, replacement coils, and refillable pods will not be subject to the tax . Your hardware costs should remain stable. Anything containing e-liquid will be taxed.

Pukka Juice's Top Tips to Beat the Vape Tax 📝

1. Stock Up on E-liquid

E-liquids typically have a shelf life of one to three years. If you have a go-to flavour, stocking up now is the most straightforward way to avoid the new cost for as long as possible. Picking up an extra shortfill or nic salt bundle each time you buy will build up a nice stash.

2. Look at Bulk Buys

If you want to save money, look for bulk deals. Purchasing larger quantities can significantly reduce the average cost per ml, which is a great way to prepare for the upcoming price hikes.

3. Forget the Hardware Panic

Don't waste your budget panic-buying coils or a new device. Unless your current kit is on its last legs, there is no rush - hardware isn't affected by the new tax.

4. Keep An Eye on the "Grace Period"

Remember, you don't need to buy everything before October 1st. The transition period means some products may stay at lower prices for a while longer. Just be aware that this is entirely dependent on retailer stock levels.
